Giving up money

Last updated on August 17, 2019

“Giving up money”, this statement is like Marmite, you either love the idea or cant stand to think about it. So far I’ve spent all of my adult life trying to better my life by starting a business and trying to earn a lot of money, so to then give it all up would be crazy! Wouldn’t it?! Well I follow a few people that do just this and their stories are truly inspirational.

David Glasheen

David Glasheen, aged 69 gave up money 20 years ago after he lost over $10 million in a single day in the stock market crash of 1987. He lost his wife, his children & his home. With his last remaining savings he bought a part lease of Restoration Island 1500 miles from Brisbane, Australia where he has now lived for almost 20 years. Having ‘given up’ money, Dave’s main concern was self-sufficiency, he needed to “live offa the fatta the lan’.” – Quote from ‘Of Mice and Men’. In order to live a money free life, Dave grows his own crops on the island and goes fishing and forages for oysters, crabs and coconuts. He even brews his own beer which he trades for fish with passing fisherman, doesn’t seems like quite a bad life now does it?

Dave works most of the day, everyday maintaining the island and looking after his food and fresh water reserves which his life ultimately depends on. Dave says living the way he does, he is the happiest he’s ever been and even said he is the “luckiest bloke in the world”. Sadly, he now faces eviction from the island and needs your help, so please check out the following links for further information.

Daniel Suelo

The next person I follow who leads this ‘No Money’ lifestyle is Daniel Suelo. He lives his life freely and without money. In the year 2000 Daniel left his entire life savings in a phone booth and walked away. He has never touched money since. Living in the wilderness and caves of Utah. He survives on wild vegetation, road kill and whatever he finds in bins. Sometimes he gets fed by his fellow followers and friends. He also boasts about not receiving any help from the government, other than occasionally using there libraries to access a computer to write his blog and to read books.

Daniels story is truly an inspiring one, and I encourage everyone to find out more about him.

My Point of View

This is a very 2 sided situation for me as I would take a part of each of these guys stories. Lets say I made a few million pounds, I could happily buy and island for self sufficient living. With this I could then start giving up money and live quite a happy life. Possibly a happier, more fulfilling life. I think I know where these guys are coming from.

What are your views and opinions on giving up money? What would you do? Where would you go? Could you do it? Leave your answers in the comments section below, i look forward to seeing everyone’s replies.
